# 1 - WHY FOLLOW "SCD"? > * WHICH DO YOU DO: "LIVE TO EAT" OR "EAT TO LIVE?"


 

As I’m writing this article, I have a 36-year old friend who is undergoing surgery and fighting for his life.  He’s endured intestinal symptoms for years, and now it is too late to remove the cancer that threatens his life.  Yes, this is intended to frighten you!  I wish he had been more frightened (by me or someone else) into taking control of his health years ago. 

 

It's estimated that 90% of all adults (and a large percentage of children) have symptoms, and don’t realize the implications of their symptoms.  If you have indigestion, bloating, acid reflux, gas, diarrhea or constipation, you, too, have a digestive problem that is impairing your health. The truth is, your digestive system is “in a vicious cycle” that could only get more serious, and lead to more serious diseases (Barrett’s Esophagus, esophageal cancer, stomach cancer, colon cancer, etc.) unless a diet change is made. 

My husband and I were not willing to continue the risk, so we changed our way of eating in 2000, and it changed our lives . . . and then members of our family . . . and then many of our friends, and now people we continue to meet.  Perhaps you’ve already tried that and it didn’t work for you.  If you haven’t tried The Specific Carbohydrate Diet, then you’ve likely only addressed a part of the problem.  The allowed foods on the SCD are foods that (because of their molecular structure) digest easily and quickly and move out of the digestive tract, not lingering to feed and overgrow the bacteria.  They are whole, natural, healthy, great tasting foods!  We never feel deprived!  These foods will aid in healing the intestines so in time you should be able to discontinue many or all medications and your immune system should become stronger to fight FOR you instead of against you.

I know, there is so much conflicting information out there.  If you’re popping a pill now and getting relief, that’s great, for the moment . . . but, what about the side effects of that little "magic" pill?  Medications all have them, you know . . . sooner or later.  The Pharmaceutical companies will downplay the risks of these medications because they MUST sell their little million dollar pills to recoup the millions it cost to develop and sell it . . . and your doctor only knows what the Pharmaceutical Companies want him to know about that little pill.  And, of course, we all know that your doctor is not schooled in nutrition or “preventive” health care.    How long do you think it will be before that pill becomes ineffective; which, in time, it will.  Then what?  Will there be so much damage to the intestines, stomach, esophagus, and immune system that you can’t regain your health?  What then? 

Perhaps your symptoms have you frightened and you don’t know what to try next.  Perhaps you’ve given up hope. Lack of knowledge can make us feel hopeless and helpless. I hope you are like I was . . . finally fed up with these nuances and with being “sick and tired” and aching all the time . . . . . and you are ready to “take control” of your health.  In that case, it’s time to look at Elaine Gottschall’s book, BREAKING THE VICIOUS CYCLE to see how to do just that . . . BREAK the vicious cycle!  Here you’ll learn which foods typically cause problems to a damaged digestive tract.  Unless you are a molecular scientist (and your doctor and nutritionist are not), you will not know about this gut/food interaction or whichj foods “break the vicious cycle” and help you to regain your health.

 

I used to “live to eat” . . . I think most Americans do. Everything revolves around “food” . . . and mostly unhealthy foods, at that!  I’ve learned that everything I eat affects my health, my attitude, and my performance in this game of “life” . . . and that without my health or a good attitude, I don’t have much.  Thanks to Dr. Haas’ and Elaine Gottschall’s research, I’ve learned to “eat to live” . . . and there is such a difference!

IMPORTANT POINTS:

 

1.   I don’t think any of us would consciously choose a miserable life.  But that’s just what many have done by ignoring their symptoms or accepting an easy, temporary, quick fix by popping a pill which only “band-aid” the symptoms. 

 

2.   Indigestion, acid reflux, gas, bloating, diarrhea and/or constipation are symptoms of impending illness from a diet not genetically suited for you.  A simple change in diet can lessen or even eliminate those symptoms . . . if you make changes before too much damage has been done. 

 

3.   Processed, starchy foods are quick and easy, but will only increase your symptoms and health problems.

 

4.   I know you are busy . . . so am I, so is everyone today.  But the bottom line is . . . if you are too busy to prepare healthy food . . . you are too busy and your priorities are terribly mixed up. Sorry, but somebody needs to say it!

 

I encourage you to research the references on this site and give the SCDiet a 2-3 month “fanatical” try to see it begin to improve your health.  Following it halfway or easing into it won’t give much, if any, improvement. You must follow it 100%!  I believe your health will improve dramatically following the SCDiet, and you will eventually reap the benefits of a stronger immune system, and start to live the life you were intended to live. I'm sure you, like many of us, will be “hooked” for life!  WHAT HAVE YOU GOT TO LOSE???
